The Roadside Clinic: Healthcare Finds a Way in Wayanad’s Tribal Heartlands

Under the uncompromisingly harsh glare of a midday sun, with no roof but the sky and no floor but the dust of a roadside, a small medical team proved the geography of care is defined by people, not buildings.
On 29 April, the residents of the Edaguni tribal colony arrived at their local community hub expecting a clinic, only to find the designated building shuttered for repairs. In many settings, this would have signalled a cancellation. Instead, the team from Amrita Kripa Charitable Hospital simply moved their equipment to the verge of the road.
Care Without Walls
Led by Dr. Ageesh MBBS MD, the improvised camp saw the roadside transformed into a hive of clinical activity. What the site lacked in infrastructure, it gained in accessibility.
The logistical challenge did little to dampen the spirits of the Edaguni tribal community. Throughout the afternoon, a steady stream of families, elderly residents, and mothers carrying small children gathered in the heat, waiting with quiet patience for a rare opportunity to consult with a physician.
The dedicated team worked with a persistent, rhythmic focus:
- Dr. Ageesh conducted full consultations and diagnostic assessments.
- Nurse Sheela provided essential clinical support and nursing care.
- Pharmacists Jisha and Nisha managed the distribution of vital medications from the roadside.
- Assistant Divya ensured the flow of patients remained steady despite the lack of a formal waiting area.
Reaching the Underserved
By the time the sun began to dip, the team had examined and treated 62 residents. In a region where the journey to a permanent hospital can be a significant barrier to health, the presence of the medical camp was more than a convenience; it was a lifeline.
The day served as a poignant reminder of the realities of healthcare in rural India. While modern facilities remain the goal, the events at Edaguni tribal colony demonstrated that the essence of medicine lies in the encounter between a clinician and a patient, even when that encounter takes place in the dirt, under a harsh sun, beside of a dusty forgotten road.
