Amrita Hospital Trainee Leads Heat Safety Drive in Wayanad Amid Rising Temperatures

Ms. Amrutha B.PA., a trainee from AIMS Kochi, conducted public awareness sessions on heat-related health risks in Wayanad as the district experiences an unusual rise in summer temperatures.

Ms. Amrutha, currently serving at Amrita Kripa Charitable Hospital in Kalpetta, led the initiative during a medical outreach programme held on 16 May 2026. The sessions took place at medical camp centres in Kainatty and Edaguni, where she addressed patients on the growing health concerns linked to heat exposure.

Wayanad, traditionally known for its moderate climate, has recently recorded temperatures ranging between 36°C and 40°C, prompting concern among healthcare providers. Speaking to attendees, Ms. Amrutha highlighted the importance of preventive measures, including maintaining adequate hydration, increasing fruit intake, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and resting in shaded environments.

“These simple steps can significantly reduce the risk of dehydration, sunburn, and more serious heat-related conditions, including heatstroke,” she noted during the sessions.

The awareness campaign reached around 60 patients and made use of visual aids such as posters and banners to improve understanding. Particular emphasis was placed on tribal communities, who are considered more vulnerable to the effects of extreme weather due to occupational exposure and limited access to healthcare resources.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort by Amrita Kripa Charitable Hospital to promote preventive healthcare practices in underserved regions, especially in response to changing climatic patterns affecting public health.
