Awareness Session on the Harmful Effects of Tobacco

On 25th June 2026, an awareness session on tobacco chewing and its harmful effects was conducted as part of a medical camp in a tribal colony. The session was led by Ms. Amrutha M, Physician Associate from Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, and Ms. Aleena Laiju, BSc. Physician Associate Intern from Amrita School of Allied Health Sciences.

The session aimed to educate the community about the health risks associated with tobacco chewing. Topics covered included the harmful effects and side effects of tobacco use, diseases that may result from long-term tobacco chewing—such as oral cancer, gum disease, and other serious health conditions—and the importance of quitting the habit.

The speakers also discussed healthier alternatives that can be used while chewing betel leaves without the addition of tobacco, encouraging participants to adopt safer practices and make informed lifestyle choices.

The awareness programme was well received by the participants and served as an important initiative in promoting health education and preventing tobacco-related diseases within the community.
