From Backyard Coops to Nutritional Sovereignty: Amrita Kripa Hospital Pioneers Grassroots Food Campaign in Wayanad Tribal Belt
In Cheeral, Sulthan Bathery, a medical outreach led by Amrita Kripa Charitable Hospital links homegrown organic poultry and kitchen gardening with indigenous women’s financial autonomy and maternal health.

In an initiative aimed at dismantling cyclical rural malnutrition and fostering micro-economic resilience, clinicians and public health practitioners from Amrita Kripa Charitable Hospital (AKCH) conducted a community nutrition camp on September 4, 2026, for the tribal hamlets of Cheeral, near Sulthan Bathery.
Led by Dr. Keerthana MBBS, a general practitioner from AKCH and physician assistant intern, Anupama BPA, from Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, Kochi, the outreach moved beyond standard clinical advice, presenting food security not simply as a clinical necessity, but as a domestic and ecological continuum anchored in organic homestead farming.
Addressing dozens of tribal families, the medical team utilized educational display charts and vernacular nutritional mapping to explain the health hazards of adulterated, chemical-laden food supplies and ultra-processed store goods. In contrast, the medical team advocated for sustainable homestead agriculture: backyard poultry and kitchen vegetable gardens.
“Food grown with our own hands carries love, care, and unimpeachable purity. It feeds the body while restoring self-reliance and mental peace”
Dr. Keerthana, MBBS.
Free Distribution of Organic Country Eggs
To ground theory into daily practice, the hospital distributed organic country poultry eggs free of cost to all participants. The facilitators highlighted that fresh eggs gathered from home-reared chickens provide an unadulterated, bioavailable protein source free from synthetic growth hormones and antibiotics.
Furthermore, cultivating seasonal vegetables in backyards guarantees access to daily, fresh produce. The physical routine involved in tending small coops and backyard patches provides natural exercise, fosters a grounded mindset, and replaces anxiety with purposeful, wholesome labor.
Strengthening Family Bonds and Female Economic Agency
A central takeaway from the camp was the intersection of homestead cultivation, family cohesion, and gender empowerment:
- Domestic Harmony: Shared engagement in garden plots and poultry care strengthens bonds and joint responsibility across generations within the household.
- Mutual Aid & Barter: Surplus vegetables and eggs can be shared with neighbors, nurturing community solidarity, or sold in local village markets to help meet daily household expenses.
- Financial Autonomy for Homemakers: The camp demonstrated how spare-time labor allows women and homemakers to generate their own independent discretionary income. By earning micro-revenues through homestead produce, women reduce financial dependency, strengthening both their family’s health and their socio-economic dignity.
As dusk fell over the Cheeral hills, the day’s message resonated not as an abstract clinical lecture, but as an actionable blueprint for dignity: that lasting tribal health will not arrive packaged in commercial blister packs or processed store cartons, but must be cultivated from the soil upwards, nurtured by family hands and anchored in economic self-determination.
